Outdoor lighting: IP ratings, glare and choosing the right lamp
Separate decorative light from the light people need to move safely. Check every component, including power supplies and charging bases, instead of treating an outdoor lamp as a fully weatherproof system.

A pleasant courtyard needs light for routes, tables and the atmosphere around them. Start with steps, changes of level, entrances and service tasks; then decide how much soft table lighting is useful. Accent lighting can highlight planting without shining into diners' eyes or neighbouring windows. Look at the site after dark before ordering a complete set. A photograph showing attractive coloured lights does not prove that a route is adequately lit, and decorative smart lamps do not replace any emergency lighting required for a commercial premises.
Read both digits and the installation instructions
The IEC's ingress-protection system describes resistance to solid objects or dust and to water. For familiar examples, IP54 indicates dust protection and resistance to splashing water, whereas IP65 combines a dust-tight enclosure with resistance to water jets under the test conditions. Neither label alone establishes suitability for immersion, pressure washing, salt spray, pool chemicals or every mounting orientation. The rating belongs to the identified component and configuration. Check the luminaire, connector and supply separately, together with temperature limits and instructions for outdoor positioning.
Two Hue products do different jobs
Philips Hue Lily is a low-voltage outdoor spotlight whose cited manufacturer page lists IP65. It is intended to illuminate features rather than serve as a portable table lamp. The Hue Go portable table lamp, Hong Kong reference 8719514404571, has an IP54 lamp rating and a rechargeable battery; the manufacturer describes bringing it inside to recharge on its base. These details make a useful comparison between fixed accent lighting and movable table light. They do not confirm that either regional package is available, wired appropriately or warranted for your particular commercial installation.
Avoid cables becoming the weak point
Plan where power supplies will sit, where guests walk and where cleaning water goes. Fixed mains wiring, protective devices and new outdoor sockets should be specified by a qualified electrician under local requirements. Do not improvise waterproofing with a plastic bag around a hot power supply or run an indoor extension lead through a puddle. If low-voltage components connect to a manufacturer system, respect that system's maximum loads and compatible lengths. Low voltage helps with some design choices but does not remove trip, heat or connection problems.
Check light quality before expanding
Try one unit at the table height and brightness you intend to use. Can guests read a menu without a harsh point of light in their eyes? Do staff see spills and steps? Can controls work when the usual phone or internet connection is unavailable? For rechargeable lamps, measure runtime in the chosen brightness setting; a maximum advertised runtime may use a much dimmer mode. Keep a spare charging rotation if lamps support an evening service. Record the settings so replacing one unit does not change the whole atmosphere.
Purchase for serviceability
Compare replacement batteries where supported, spare power supplies, compatible controllers, local support and the cost of expanding later. Do not select a connected system solely for colour effects if simple lamps satisfy the requirement more reliably. Use manufacturer links to verify the exact regional specification, then obtain a local delivered quotation. No price, life expectancy or delivery promise is assumed here. Our selection is based on documented functions and limits, with the final electrical and commercial suitability checked for the actual premises.
